The iPhone offers a video chat app called FaceTime, also available on the iPod, iPad and Apple computers. It is possible to turn off iMessage altogether, in which case all text and multimedia messaging will continue to be handled by your cellular carrier. If a Wi-Fi connection is not available, messages are sent over your cell phone carrier's data network. When you place a standard phone call on an iPhone, the voice data is handled specifically by the carrier you use, bypassing the need for an Internet connection. There are several carriers that offer the iPhone in the United States, including Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile.
